Getting ready for an auto insurance quote

A useful auto insurance conversation starts with a few basics, not a perfect stack of paperwork. Use this checklist to organize what you know and leave the rest as questions for your agent.

General preparation guide

Buying a vehicle, approaching renewal or reviewing what you already carry? Begin with what is changing and the date you have in mind. This worksheet is a starting point, not a quote or an insurance application.

Make the comparison about coverage, too.

A lower quoted premium can accompany different limits, deductibles or coverages. Compare those details as well as price. The NAIC recommends comparing quotes on the same coverage basis. [1]

Share the details through the right channel.

For the first conversation, you can start with the vehicle year, make and model and what you use it for. Your agent can explain what additional information is needed for an actual quote. Keep driver’s license numbers, account information and identity documents out of a public checklist or ordinary website message.

Separate a question from an instruction.

Asking about a different deductible is not the same as asking to change your policy. Tell the agency whether you are exploring options or seeking a specific change. Do not assume a vehicle is insured because you read this guide or began a request.

Not sure about an answer? Bring the question.

A missing detail should become a question for the conversation, not a guess. “I’m not sure” is a reasonable starting point. Keep the current information available so the agent can explain what needs to be checked.

Questions to bring with you

  • Which limits and deductibles are being quoted?
  • What information do you need to prepare an actual quote?
  • What must happen before coverage begins?
  • Would it be useful to review my home insurance at the same time?
